MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN

POSITION SUMMARY

The position requires the incumbent to provide mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on all plant equipment in a safe and efficient manner to maintain them at the Original Manufacturer (OEM) standard.

Qualifications, Experience and Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or City & Guilds 1 & 2 Mechanical Engineering
  • Ability to Machine, Weld, Vulcanizing and Industrial Mechanics
  • Special training in Alignment of couplings and repairs to belts
  • Ability of troubleshoot Hydraulics and Pneumatics systems
  • Ability to read Blue Prints
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools
  • Basic Computer Skills in MS Office

ELECTRICIAN

Position Summary

The Electrician is responsible for the execution of all preventative maintenance and reports on all plant equipment and components in a safe manner. The responsibility includes but not limited to inspecting, diagnosing and repairing electrical and electronic systems.

Responsibilities:

The Electrician will be expected among other things to:

  • Perform industrial electrical maintenance
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair all electrical equipment and systems
  • Execute electrical preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Check and record condition of equipment,
  • Maintain DC motors and service generators, and

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering or Technical or Vocational Training in Electrical Engineering to City and Guild Level 3
  • Three (3) years’ experience in heavy industrial workshop environment with experience in diagnosing problems with three-phase motors and control circuits, would be an asset
  • Knowledge of PLC systems would also be an asset
  • To work in dust, noise, confine areas, heat and heights

LUBRICATOR

Position Summary

The Lubricator is responsible for lubrication and changing oil on all plant equipment according to the lubrication plan and manufacturer’s requirements.

Responsibilities:

The Lubricator will be expected among other things to:

  • Inspect and monitor the plant equipment and use the prepared checklist as part of the predictive and preventative maintenance programme.
  • Lubricate all plant equipment according to the lubrication plan and the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Eliminate oil leaks where ever possible and or report such observations and any observed mechanical defects to foreman.
  • Take and prepare oil samples for transmission to reference laboratories.
  • Take vibration readings with the use of vibration analysis equipment.
  • Assist with the repairs of mechanical equipment.
  • Refill and change oil in engine reservoirs at stipulated intervals.
  • Report to the foreman all equipment or machinery checked and lubricated.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Technical or Vocational training in mechanical engineering to the level of City & Guilds Level 1.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a similar capacity in an industrial plant
  • Knowledge of oil types.
  • Knowledge of the servicing requirements for equipment and machinery in the mills.
  • A sound knowledge of safety practices throughout the plant.
  • To work in dust, noise, confine areas, heat and heights

POWER STATION TECHNICIAN

POSITION SUMMARY

The position requires the incumbent to maintain and repair all electrical and electronic systems to agreed availability standards and ensure that work is done safely. It also requires the incumbent to perform calibrations of plant measuring systems, and assist in installation of new equipment or upgrades

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs all duties in safe and environmentally acceptable manner and as per the plant’s safety and environmental policies and the OEM’s instructions.
  • Prepares equipment as required (e.g. lifting equipment, pressure vessels) for certification as necessary for compliance to legal and other standards;
  • Cleans, lubricates and maintains equipment to prevent equipment failure or deterioration; maintains a clean work area (control room and engine floor); stores parts and tools appropriately.
  • Monitors and inspects equipment and indicators; records and maintains log of operational data (at established intervals), analyses, reports any abnormalities; troubleshoots based on findings and repairs or makes adjustments. Maintains equipment history records.
  • Starts, stops, synchronizes and regulates power on gen-sets.
  • Operates, controls and maintains all auxiliary equipment such as pumps, fans, separators and compressors to supply fuel, cooling water and air to engines.
  • Maintains standby generator; places on line in event of emergency; prepares station in event of potential disaster (natural or other).
  • Performs services and overhauls of engines and auxiliary systems as per OEM or established schedule and according to OEM’s documented procedures.
  • Identifies areas for improvement; refurbish spares; assist with any modifications as required; assists in ordering of spares.
  • Performs any other tasks ancillary or related to the foregoing as required.

Qualifications, Experience and Requirements:

  • City & Guilds 1&2 Automotive or Mechanical Engineering; knowledge of operations and maintenance of reciprocating engines.
  • Three (3) years of experience in similar position.
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Good oral and written communication skills; pays attention to detail.
  • Can perform calculations using basic formulae.
  • Shift duties as assigned, rotational shift. Willing to work outside of rostered shift as operations require.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, grease, fumes, dust, dirt; working in awkward positions, confined spaces and at heights

FITTER/WELDER

Position Summary

Responsible for the execution of all preventative maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and components in a safe manner. The responsibility includes but not limited to inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, fabrication, machining, welding and lubrication.

The Fitter/Welder will be expected among other things to:

  • Execute mechanical preventative maintenance and repairs; and
  • Perform necessary plant and workshop repairs including fabrication, machining and welding

Minimum Qualifications

MECHANICAL ENGINEER - Power Station

Position Summary

Plans, organizes, directs and controls the activities required for the operation and maintenance of the diesel power plant.  Ensures maximum operational availability of the plant at the lowest possible cost and in accordance with budget

The Mechanical Engineer will be required to:

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the foreman and technicians;
  • Ensure the reliability of all equipment at the station and garage by carrying out a planned program of predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance;
  • Prepare cost estimates and provide input towards the budgeting process;
  • Analyze performance and downtime reports of mechanical equipment and research reasons for machine failures and formulate action plans; and
  • Develop and implements critical spares stock levels, equipment checklist and inspection frequencies for the computerized Maintenance Management System.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements           

  • University Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related area;
  • Five (5) or more years of job related experience;
  • Experience in Generating Power Plant maintenance activities and reciprocating engines;
  • A comprehensive understanding of the principles of engineering and regulatory requirements for generation equipment; and
  • Knowledge of prime engine movers, cooling water distribution systems, environmental controls, fuel systems and plant electrical and control systems.
